Parental Leave - Maternity/Paternity/Adoption

Understanding Parental Leave

Staff: Parental Leave is a paid leave of up to 30 work days associated with the birth of your own child or the placement of a child with you in connection with adoption or foster care. This type of absence is not charged against your leave credits.

Faculty Parental Leave: Parental Leave is paid leave of up to 50 work days and should commence within a 135-day period beginning within 60 days prior to the anticipated arrival date of a new child and ending 75 days after the arrival. Faculty (with academic year (AY) appointment) have additional flexibility in terms of commencing their Parental Leave due to the nature of work. In order to minimize disruptions of the academic program and impacts on students, the following options are available:

  1. Leave Sharing: When a faculty unit employee is eligible for parental leave and their spouse or partner is also a faculty unit employee, one spouse/partner may donate all or part of their parental leave to the other with the approval of the appropriate administrator(s).
  2. Workload Reduction (WLR) in lieu of parental leave: Upon request of the faculty unit employee, faculty unit employee with an academic year appointment may be given a reduced assignment over one academic term in lieu of a 50 day parental leave, as follows:
    • A workload reduction of 60% (9 WTUs) for one semester

Paid Parental Leave runs concurrently with other parental, pregnancy disability and/or family medical leave.
