Kristin Nicole Dukes, Ph.D. (she/they) serves as Chief Diversity Officer at San José State University. Kristin Joined SJSU during January of 2024. Dr. Dukes collaborates with stakeholders across the university to provide empathetic leadership and expert strategic direction to further advance an environment that is welcoming, inclusive, diverse, and mutually respectful for all students, faculty, staff, and alumni. The CDO reports directly to President Teniente-Matson, serves on the President’s Cabinet, leads the Office for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, serves as a tri-chair of the Campus Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and many others. Dr. Dukes most recently served as Chief Diversity Officer/Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Title IX Coordinator at Chatham University in Pittsburgh, PA, and as the Dean for Institutional Diversity at Allegheny College in Meadville, PA. Prior to serving in these senior diversity officer positions, Dr. Dukes was an Associate Professor of Psychology at Simmons University in Boston, MA.
Dr. Dukes has more than seventeen years of experience leading institutional diversity in higher education including recruitment and retention, curriculum design, delivering diversity and inclusion competency workshops, and serving as a consultant to various college offices. Her research expertise is in stereotyping, prejudice, discrimination, and social justice. She has published research in various outlets including the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Journal of Social Issues, and Analyses of Social Issues and Public Policy and presented at numerous conferences including the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues, Society of Experimental Social Psychology, and the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education. Dr. Dukes is a recipient of the 2021 Outstanding Paper Emerald Literati Award from Emerald Publishing for her paper “Anti-Racist Actions and Accountability: Not More Empty Promises.” Additionally, Dr. Dukes was named a Featured Feminist Scholar by the Association for Women in Psychology, received a dissertation award from the American Association of Blacks in Higher Education (AABHE), and was awarded a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Fellowship from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
