Welcome to Mechanical Engineering!

Typical Jobs

Mechanical engineers play a pivotal role in various industries, contributing their expertise to design, develop, and maintain a wide range of mechanical systems and devices. One of the most common job avenues for mechanical engineers is in the field of product design and development. In this capacity, mechanical engineers work closely with cross-functional teams to create innovative products and systems, from consumer electronics to automotive components.

Mechanical engineers also have a significant presence in the realm of energy systems and thermal- fluids. They are instrumental in designing, analyzing, and optimizing energy generation and distribution systems, including power plants, HVAC systems, and renewable energy installations. These engineers leverage their expertise in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics to model and improve the performance of energy systems, ensuring they operate efficiently while meeting environmental regulations.

Mechanical engineers also find exciting career opportunities in mechatronics and robotics, where they merge mechanical design with electronics and control systems to create intelligent and autonomous machines. In mechatronics, mechanical engineers work alongside electrical and software engineers to develop robotic systems that can sense their environment, make decisions, and execute precise actions. These systems have a wide range of applications, from advanced manufacturing and medical devices to autonomous vehicles and consumer electronics.

How Your Degree Helps Society

Mechanical engineering drives societal progress by advancing technology, improving energy efficiency, and enhancing infrastructure. It fosters innovation in transportation, healthcare, manufacturing, and environmental sustainability. Through design, optimization, and problem-solving, mechanical engineers contribute to a safer, more efficient, and sustainable world.

Student Clubs

The Department of Mechanical Engineering Department has a strong culture of student club activities. We have student chapters of several professional organizations American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), Spartan Racing Baja (SAE Baja), Spartan Racing (Formula SAE). As part of these clubs and others, we have many activities and competitions against other universities.
