Welcome to Computer Engineering!

CMPE Department at SJSU

The Computer Engineering (CMPE) Department at San José State University is a leading provider of software and engineering professionals to various major companies in Silicon Valley and beyond Silicon Valley. The department is located in the heart of Silicon Valley to make more close collaborations and mentorships between students and alumni for future workforce development. We also provide high-quality education and research-oriented curricula with projects and hands-on labs to be an intelligent decision-maker through a critical thinking process.  Our department keeps improving our programs with our faculty and industry partners to deliver our expert knowledge and experiences to our students. The department serves more than 2200 undergraduate and graduate students and offers BS and MS degrees in both computer and software engineering.

The Computer Engineering Department provides a hands-on learning experience in cutting-edge areas for computer and software engineering. It provides various advanced courses with hands-on labs to cover emerging new technologies while teaching strong fundamentals in networks, hardware, and software. We also offer diverse specialization areas to let students focus on developing their capability with specific skills: Network Systems, System Software Architecture, Cybersecurity, and Machine Learning Engineering. These specialization areas enable students to develop their skills in networks, robotics, embedded system design, machine learning systems, cloud, and self-driving cars depending on each specialization. Classes are constantly being added in emerging technologies such as big data, mobile devices and applications, the Internet of Things, data analytics, and more. Through industry projects or master projects/theses, our students can have strong confidence in their technical experts with soft skills. In addition, through engineering societies and advisors, students can be closely advised by our faculty and academic coordinators. It provides its faculty and students with ample opportunities for close collaborative ties with industry and research partners in Silicon Valley.

Job Positions

Students with a Computer Engineering degree can work in different job positions at many high-tech companies and government agencies.  Here are typical job functions: software engineers, hardware engineers, test engineers, project leaders, cloud architects, data scientists, and managers, since they can work in software and hardware.  All high-tech companies in Silicon Valley keep recruiting our CMPE students with diverse job titles and our programs prepare you for a professional career at companies from small startups to multinational corporations.

Student Clubs

The department has Software and Computer Engineering Society (SCE) to help students succeed in their majors. SCE provides a social space for students to congregate and collaborate. They encourage members to connect and make new friends through social events and they also organize technical workshops with industry sponsors and faculty. Many Computer Engineering students at SJSU are also members of the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Student Chapter. The IEEE organization is the largest technical professional organization in the world.  The IEEE Student Chapter at SJSU supports its members in their studies and careers by providing group studies, course tutorials, extracurricular activities, access to industry information, networking, and career advancement.
