Field Safety
Working in field environments is a crucial part of some research activities and education at SJSU. Because field environments are dynamic, field researchers must adequately prepare for potential risks and emergencies. Working in the field, whether locally or abroad, can present risks for field research participants due to the nature of the location and/or from the type of activity being performed.
Some things to consider in advance would be:
- Do you have adequate and redundant communication devices?
- Do you have emergency supplies: water, food, PPE, first aid?
- Are you preperared for the environment you may be entering: weather, bites and stings, urban vs. rural environments?
- Do you need specialized training: First Aid/CPR, wilderness survival, specialized equipment?
- Do you know who to contact in the event of an emergency?
