Costs
There are a variety of costs to consider when studying abroad or away. What is included or not included in fees paid to SJSU will vary based on the program type. Read below to learn more about program costs and payments.
SJSU Exchange, CSU IP, NSE, and ISEP Programs
Studying abroad on a program for a semester or a year can be less expensive or about as expensive as living here in the Bay Area. Depending on the country of study, other costs such as meals and accommodations can be comparable to the Bay Area and are oftentimes cheaper; some students have actually saved money by studying abroad. Below are the kinds of program costs that students will need to plan for.
- Tuition & Fees (For most programs, this is your SJSU tuition. Consult the Bursar's Office for up to date information for tuition rates.)
- Meals & Accommodations (varies by program & location)
- Airfare (varies by location)
- SJSU International Health Insurance (mandatory for all program participants): about $300 per semester
- Passport: $165.00 (or $0 if you already have one!)
- Student Visa (varies by country—some locations do not require visas for US citizens)
- Personal Expenses (travel, entertainment, etc.)
- Emergency Funds (lost luggage, etc.)
Tuition and fees for SJSU Exchange and ISEP programs are paid to SJSU; students studying abroad through CSU IP programs pay tuition and fees directly to the CSU Chancellor’s Office. NSE students have two payment options: Home Pay and Host Pay. Home Pay students pay the same SJSU Tuition to SJSU (no tuition collected by host university); Host Pay students pay in-state tuition to the host campus (no tuition collected by SJSU). Housing, meals, parking, and other miscellaneous fees are paid to the host campus.
All participants must pay the costs for their program as indicated on their MySJSU account prior to departure. ISEP Exchange students must pay a $100 non-refundable application fee and a $425 placement fee after acceptance. For ISEP Direct students, the $425 fee must be paid as well, but is considered a non-refundable deposit (applied towards the total program fee). CSU IP students must pay a $500 deposit directly to CSU IP.
Faculty-Led Programs (FLP) and Summer School Abroad (SSA)
For Faculty-Led Programs and Summer School Abroad programs, students will pay three types of fees to SJSU:
- Tuition & Fees: $350.00 per unit (current as of November 2023)
- Administrative Fee: $300 (current as of November 2023)
- Program Fee: Program fees, which cover your on-site travel costs, can vary depending on what is included in the program budget and the program destination (for example - group meals, lodging, activities, etc.) This typically includes the following:
- Housing
- Insurance
- Meals (varies by program)
- Activities/excursions (varies by program)
- Ground transportation onsite (varies by program)
View the Financial Info tab when viewing the program page on the Spartans Abroad Portal to view the specific fees for that program.
Students will also be responsible for the following out of pocket expenses:
- Airfare (amount varies by location)
- Passport: $165.00 (or $0 if you already have one!)
- Student Visa (varies by country—most locations do not require visas for U.S. citizens for programs less than 90 days)
- Meals not already included (varies by program)
- Personal Expenses (travel, entertainment, etc.)
- Emergency Funds (lost luggage, etc.)
Once accepted, students are required to pay a $600 non-refundable deposit to confirm their participation. Your deposit will be applied toward your program cost. The $600 non-refundable deposit charge will be placed on your student account after the submission deadline for the Commitment to Participate form. The SAA office will provide the deposit deadline in your acceptance letter. In order to hold your spot in the FLP/SSA, you will need to make the $600 non-refundable deposit. The remaining program fee and tuition will be due at the time of course registration.
