Soma de Bourbon received her B.A. in Native American Studies from the University of California, Berkeley, and obtained her Ph.D. in the History of Consciousness Program from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
In 2013, Soma de Bourbon joined San Jose State University's Department of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences (SISS). As an Assistant Professor, she has taught a variety of interdisciplinary courses including: Women’s Studies, Asian American Studies, and Sociology.
