Spartan Speaker Series Presents: Jenny Slate - The Intersection of Comedy and Mental Health

Jenny Slate is an actress, author, and comedian, whose breakout role came by way of her leading performance in Obvious Child. Jenny's comedy special "Stage Fright" was released on Netflix to rave reviews and exemplified her ability to reframe comedy's relationship to mental health using humor to hold space for anxiety, and fear.
She has had several notable television performances in such series as Parks and Recreation, House of Lies, Bored to Death, and Girls.
Additionally, Jenny wrote the national bestselling novel Little Weirds, which Vanity Fair named one of its "31 Great Quarantine Reads.”

Meet Alyssarhaye Graciano, MACLA’s new Visual Arts Curator. Both Alyssarhaye’s arts and curatorial practices focus on challenging the traditional ideologies of fine arts. In this artist talk, Graciano will discuss how knitting beanies weaved a path from owning a small business to writing a book, and into the nonprofit arts world. She will cover how to develop your professional goals by leaning into your strengths and interests. Hear the perspective of a curator and learn how exhibitions come together, from concept to the opening.

On March 12, 2023, The Sacramento Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, Sacramento National Coalition of 100 Black Women, and One Community Health will host the 2023 Women's Health Summit. The summit will bring together women leaders, health experts, and advocates from California to address the critical issues of reproductive health, mental health, and HIV care and prevention. The theme for this year's summit is "Learning from Our Legacy: Dismantling Health Inequities Among Women."
The summit will provide a platform for women to share their experiences and knowledge on how to address health disparities that disproportionately affect women, particularly those in marginalized communities. Discussions will focus on reproductive health, mental health, and HIV care and prevention, as these are areas where women continue to face significant challenges.
The keynote speakers and panelists at the summit will engage participants in discussing a range of topics, including access to healthcare, education and awareness, stigma and discrimination, policy and advocacy, and community engagement. They will share best practices, research findings, and innovative solutions to address these issues.

SJSU Women's Gender & Sexuality Studies Program presents, “The Possibilities and Limits of Transnational Feminist Critique in the Context of Afghanistan” with Dr. Anila Daulatzai and Dr. Najwa Mayer, moderated by Dr. Saugher Nojan.
Co-sponsored with Boston University - Women's, Gender & Sexuality Studies Program.
Dr. Anila Daulatzai is a sociocultural anthropologist with active research projects in both Afghanistan and Pakistan. Her current interests primarily circulate around the themes of war and humanitarianism, as well as the related themes of violence and care. She holds a PhD from Johns Hopkins University and graduate degrees from UCLA in public health and Islamic studies. She is currently working on a book manuscript titled "War and What Remains: Everyday Life in Contemporary Kabul, Afghanistan” which explores everyday life amidst a current war and occupation with a backdrop of prior wars, occupation, and humanitarianism.
Dr. Najwa Mayer is a postdoctoral fellow with the Society of Fellows in the College of Arts and Sciences at Boston University, with affiliations in Religion and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. She holds a PhD in American Studies from Yale University. As an interdisciplinary scholar of cultural politics, her research areas vary widely though her current research focuses on the gendered and sexual governance of race and religion in the US and its empire in the 20th and 21st centuries, with particular interest in the global “war on terror.” Her first book manuscript examines this century’s mass globalization of and contentions within “Muslim American” popular cultures through the interrelations between racial, sexual, and secular politics, cultural genres, and global Markets.
The Carol Mukhopadhyay Feminist Lecture Series was endowed in 2012 by Emeritus Professor of Anthropology Dr. Carol Mukhopadhyay and has featured feminist scholars ranging from Sistersong founder Lorretta Ross to Chicana scholars Maylei Blackwell and Maria Cotera; it remains the sole annual lecture series at SJSU.
The event will be a coast-to-coast hybrid on Zoom with Dr. Mayer in Boston speaking
with the rest of us in the San Francisco Bay Area. At SJSU, we will meet in person
in the Compean Student Union for a live broadcast with students, faculty, and staff.
The event is public and open to all at no cost.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, join the Mineta Transportation Institute (MTI) and the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO) for a conversation with a diverse panel of women transportation leaders representing academia, public and private industries, and the nonprofit sectors as they share personal stories from their careers and lessons learned as they rose to the top.
Moderated by April Rai, CEO of COMTO and a member of the MTI Board of Trustees, this webinar delves into a critical issue faced by the transportation industry: How are we prioritizing women and other traditionally underrepresented voices to build the most inclusive and effective transportation workforce for our future? WGSS Book Talk with Dr. Lois Helmbold: Making Choices, Making Do: Survival Strategies of Black and White Working-Class Women during the Great Depression

Dr. Helmbold is an independent American historian and women’s studies scholar with a long history of Women’s Studies research and activism. She served previously as professor and chair of the Women’s Studies Program here at San Jose State, and also the department at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Her research includes topics of work, welfare, and government programs and the experiences of black and white working-class women, particularly in the Great Depression.
Her 2022 book with Rutgers Press, Making Choices, Making Do is a comparative study of Black and white working-class women’s survival strategies during the Great Depression. Based on analysis of employment histories and Depression-era interviews of 1,340 women in Chicago, Cleveland, Philadelphia, and South Bend and letters from domestic workers, Lois Helmbold finds that Black women lost work more rapidly and in greater proportions. The benefits that white women accrued because of structural racism meant they avoided the utter destitution that more commonly swallowed their Black peers, even when they practiced similar strategies. This important work of labor history challenges the limits of segregated histories and encourage more comparative analyses.

The Center for Literary Arts is pleased to present 2023 Lurie Professor and acclaimed author, Jean Guerrero in a reading and conversation with J. Michael Martinez on Thursday, March 23, 2023 at the Student Union Theater at 7:00 pm (PST).
Jean Guerrero is a columnist at the Los Angeles Times. She is the author of Hatemonger: Stephen Miller, Donald Trump and the White Nationalist Agenda. Her first book, Crux: A Cross-Border Memoir, won a PEN Literary Award and was named one of NPR's Best Books of 2019. Her writing is featured in Vanity Fair, Politico, The Nation, Wired, the New York Times, The Washington Post, Best American Essays 2019 by Rebecca Solnit and more. She won the 2022 "Best Commentary" award from the Sacramento Press Club. While working at KPBS as an investigative border reporter, she won an Emmy, contributed to NPR, the PBS NewsHour and more. Months before Trump’s family separations captured national attention, her PBS reporting on the practice was cited by members of Congress. She started her career at the Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones Newswires as a foreign correspondent in Mexico and Central America. She was named one of the California Chicano News Media Association’s most influential Latina journalists.
Longlisted for the National Book Award, winner of the National Poetry Series, and a recipient of the Walt Whitman Award from the Academy of American Poets, J. Michael Martinez is the author of three collections of poetry, Heredities (LSU Press), In the Garden of the Bridehouse (University of Arizona Press), and Museum of the Americas (Penguin Press). A fourth collection of poetry , Tarta Americana, is forthcoming from Penguin Press in 2023. A Public Voices Fellow with the OpEd Project, Martinez's poetry may be found in various publications including PBS, The Poetry Society of America’s New American Poets Series, New American Writing, and POETRY. His writings have been anthologized in Ahsahta Press' "The Arcadia Project: North American Postmodern Pastoral,'' Rescue Press' "The New Census: 40 American Poets," and Counterpath Press' "Angels of the Americlypse: New Latin@ Writing." An Assistant Professor of Poetry at San Jose State University, Martinez lives in California.
