Introducing the New Professional Flight Program
San Jose State University – Department of Aviation and Technology Would like to introduce
the Professional Flight degree option!
This Fall, SJSU Aviation majors will have a new option for their degree program. In
the Professional Flight option, students will receive university credit by earning
their Private Pilot certificate, Instrument Rating and Commercial rating.
For many years, Aviation majors had to choose one of three concentrations for their degree program:
- Flight Operations – A degree program structured for students wanting to pursue a career as a professional pilot
- Aviation Management – A program for students hoping to work in airport management, airline management or in any number of aviation related management careers
- Maintenance Management – A program requiring students to earn an Airframe and Powerplant mechanics certificate, with the goal of working into maintenance related management positions in airlines or in general aviation
Since 1962, the California State University system has prohibited students from flying airplanes as a student activity. Our students in the Flight Operations concentration had to pursue flight ratings outside of their university activities. The new program allows students to earn university credits for ratings earned at affiliated FAA approved flight schools. The program combines a technical degree program with flight activities.
San Jose State University is the only public university in California offering a degree in Aviation.
