- Does Zoom has enough capacity to handle the transition to online courses?
-
Zoom is a web-based application that is hosted from the cloud and does not operate on our network. Attached is an email from Zoom to the Chancellor’s Office with detailed information on Zoom’s scaling processes for handling sudden influxes. Zoom has assured us that they can easily accommodate this increased usage without any problems.
We understand that Zoom is critical to your plans for online sessions. eCampus have done great work with Zoom and other online teaching tools to enable our campus’ transition to online modalities.
For more detailed information, please review this memo [pdf].

Technical Capacity
- Does the SJSU Network have enough capacity and speed to handle online and hybrid teaching?
-
SJSU network infrastructure has enough capacity.
If you are working or teaching from home, your connections to services such as Canvas and Zoom do not go through the SJSU IT network. The only service that uses the SJSU IT network is Duo, and once you’re authenticated, you will not need to do so again for the rest of your work day.
It’s possible that if you are experiencing connectivity issues, it may be a result of your internet service provider (ISP, such as AT&T or Comcast). Many local ISPs are reporting increased usage due to the especially high volume of companies moving to work-from-home status.
If you wish to conduct class online from your workspace on campus, there is more than enough bandwidth on our university network. For context, the SJSU network currently has an external capacity of 100 Gbits. Typically, we see network traffic peak at only 14 Gbits. This includes streaming traffic in the dorms, research utilization, and regular daily campus activities. We have enough extra bandwidth to cover increased volume and don’t expect any capacity issues with the SJSU network.
-
- Can I use my personal computer for remote access?
-
Yes. Your personal PCs can easily use the cloud and exiting software to access SJSU systems. If there is some special software needed, we have developed an agreement for supporting personal laptops, that requires VP level approval
