SJSU Majors Requiring the Precalculus Proficiency Assessment (PPA)

CALCULUS FOR MATHEMATICS, SCIENCE, ENGINEERING, AND (BS) ECONOMICS

The majors listed below require MATH 30 or 30X: Calculus I, and most require further mathematics in the calculus series. 

Students who have not earned one of the following m​ust take the Precalculus Proficiency Assessment (PPA)​ to be eligible for MATH 30 or 30X:

  • C- or better in MATH 19: Precalculus or an equivalent course from another college
  • C- or better in MATH 18A: College Algebra ​and​ MATH 18B: Trigonometry or an equivalent course from another college
  • 3 or better on the AP Calculus AB or AP Calculus BC exam
  • 50 or better on the CLEP Precalculus or Calculus

CALCULUS FOR AVIATION, ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY, PACKAGING AND (BA) ECONOMICS

The majors listed below require MATH 71 or 71X: Calculus for Business and Aviation

Students who have not earned one of the following ​must take the Precalculus Proficiency Assessment (PPA)​ to be eligible for MATH 71 or 71X:

  • C- or better in MATH 18A: College Algebra or an equivalent course from another college
  • 3 or better on the AP Calculus AB or AP Calculus BC exam
  • 50 or better on the CLEP Precalculus or Calculus
  • SAT Math score of 570 or higher
  • ACT Math score of 23 or higher

MATHEMATICS FOR BUSINESS (all concentrations) AND PACKAGING

Business Administration BS (all concentrations) and Packaging BS require MATH 70 or 70X: Mathematics for Business.

Students in Packaging BS are required to take both MATH 70: Mathematics for Business and MATH 71: Calculus for Business and Aviation.

Students who have not earned one of the following ​must take the Precalculus Proficiency Assessment (PPA)​ to be eligible for MATH 70 or 70X:

  • C- or better in MATH 18A: College Algebra or an equivalent course from another college
  • 3 or better on the AP Calculus AB or AP Calculus BC exam
  • 50 or better on the CLEP Precalculus or Calculus
  • SAT Math score of 570 or higher
  • ACT Math score of 23 or higher
