Goal 2: Excel and Lead

Be an academic institution recognized for the leadership contributions of its faculty, staff, students, and alumni to addressing important challenges in our fields of study and in the regional and global communities in which all SJSU community members serve.

Desired Outcome 1

Gain a national and global reputation for academic excellence characterized by scholarly and professional contributions from faculty members who are genuine teacher-scholars and staff who are subject matter experts in their fields.

Metrics

• Improved success of faculty

  • Improved success of faculty in Tenure and Promotion, and in retention of faculty.

• Increased publication of faculty, student, and staff voices

  • Increased publication of faculty, student, and staff voices in publicly-engaged scholarship (as measured by quotes, publications, and citations in mainstream media outlets).

• Increased number and size of sponsorship, grants, and donations

  • Increased number and size of corporate-sponsorships, government and non-profit foundation grants, and individual donations supporting RSCA and faculty, staff, and student innovation.

• Increased number of patents and revenues

  • Increased number of patents and revenues for intellectual property commercialization.

• Classifications and rankings

  • National educational / research institution classification (e.g. R2) and rankings (e.g. USNWR, QS, etc.).

• Increased faculty awards

  • Increased number of faculty national and international recognition awards.

Engage students at all levels through faculty-mentored interdisciplinary research, scholarship and creative activities.

• Increased in students research

  • Increased number of undergraduate students involved in research.

• Increased in students start-ups

  • Increased number of student start-up ventures.

Desired Outcome 3

Excel in the engagement of people from underrepresented communities as thought leaders in scholarly activity.

• Baseline participation in student research support programs

  • Baseline participation of students in Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) and other student research support programs, while setting targets for increased student participation and success in such programs.

• Increased recognition of students from underrepresented communities

  • Increase the recognition of graduate and undergraduate students from underrepresented communities (as measured by awards, quotes, and publications) after disaggregating across demographics.

Desired Outcome 4

Excel in interdisciplinary education, research, scholarship, and innovation that capitalize on the university’s signature strengths and leverage opportunities for students, faculty, and staff.

Metrics

• Increased in employee research

  • Increased externally-funded faculty/staff-led research expenditures.

• Increased in faculty applicants to fellowship competitions

  • Increased number of faculty applicants to nationally-competitive fellowship competitions – identified and supported by the institution (e.g., Ford, Carnegie, Guggenheim, etc.).

• Academic programs in technological advances

  • Academic programs that capitalize on the technological advances in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Robotics, Data Science, etc.
