EDSE 14 Sign Language

Our department offers a minor in deaf education or special education so that SJSU undergraduate students can develop a foundation in dimensions of special education around language, ability, and inclusion while also connecting with other SJSU students from across the university.

Additionally, we've teamed up with the SJSU Liberal Studies program to offer a Spartan Accelerated Graduate Education (SAGE) program so that SJSU undergraduate students can simultaneously earn a BA in Liberal Studies, Education Specialist Credential, and MA in Special Education.

Minor in Deaf Education

Develop a basic understanding of American Sign Language, introduction to deaf culture, and speech, language, and typical development over 4 courses.

  • EDSE 14A: American Sign Language - 1
  • EDSE 14B: American Sign Language - 2
  • EDSE 115: Introduction to Deaf Culture
  • EDSE 102: Speech, Language & Typical Development

Learn more about each of these courses on the SJSU Catalog website. Please note that EDSE 115 is only offered in the Spring semester. EDSE 14A and EDSE 14B are sequential and can not be taken in the same semester. 

Minor in Special Education

Earn our minor by completing a 4-course track in either Track 1 - Inclusive Education, or Track 2 -  Early Childhood Special Education. Courses taken for the Minor in Special Education can also be used towards one of our Education Specialist Credential Programs. You must obtain a bachelor's degree before you can enroll in the credential program.

 Track 1 - Inclusive Education

  • EDSE 102 - Speech, Language & Typical, Atypical Development
  • EDSE 110 - Autism Spectrum Disorders
  • EDSE 124 - Methodologies for English Learners with and without Disabilities
  • EDSE  241- Emerging Technology for All Learners

Please note that EDSE 124 and EDSE 241 are only offered in the fall semester. EDSE 110 is only offered in the spring semester. Please plan accordingly to complete the special education minor. 

 Track 2 - Early Childhood Special Education

  • EDSE 102 - Speech, Language & Typical, Atypical Development
  • EDSE 104 - Atypical Development in Young Children
  • EDSE 108 - Assessment and Evaluation: Atypical Young Children
  • EDSE 110 - Autism Spectrum Disorders

Please note that EDSE 104 and EDSE 108 are only offered in the fall semester. EDSE 110 is only offered in the spring semester. Please plan accordingly to complete the special education minor.

Steps to Request to Add a Minor

In order to earn a minor in Special Education (Inclusive or Early Childhood), or Deaf Education, you must apply to declare the minor. Review the information above and in the catalog to ensure you are eligible for one of the minors offered through the Department of Special Education. After reviewing your eligibility please complete the application form below. 

Minor Application due dates:

  • Fall Semester: October 1
  • Spring Semester: March 1

Minor Application Form

Minor applications will be accepted from the beginning of the semester until the due date. Minor applications will be processed 4-6 weeks after submission. You will be notified when your minor application is complete. No applications will be processed during the summer. Spartan Accelerated Graduate Education (SAGE) Program

The Lurie College of Education’s Spartan Accelerated Graduate Education (SAGE) programs provide undergraduate students with an accelerated path to a teaching credential and masters degree. SJSU students can apply for SAGE programs when they meet the eligibility requirements, typically during their junior years.

SAGE scholars pursue their bachelor’s and graduate degrees simultaneously, earning graduate credit as undergraduate students. These programs provide a rigorous and cohesive educational experience that integrates subject matter, pedagogy and research. The benefits are numerous, including:

  1. reducing the number of units to earn the bachelor’s, credential and master’s degrees
  2. allowing students to pay undergraduate fees for some graduate courses
  3. providing students with a seamless application when applying to a graduate career

Mathematics,Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP)

The Lurie College of Education’s ITEP program provides undergraduate students with an accelerated path to a teaching credential. SJSU students begin taking credential courses during their junior year and take classes in both the Single Subject and Education Specialist Mild Moderate credential. This unique Math ITEP  provides candidates with an opportunity to complete the:

  1. BA in Math + Single Subject Credential in Math in 4 years
  2. Education Specialist Credential with MA in SPED in the 5th year.
