Dr. Soteria (Roula) Svorou earned a B.A. degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Athens, Greece and a M.A. and Ph.D. in linguistics from the University at Buffalo (SUNY). Dr. Svorou became a member of the CSU faculty — first at CSU Fresno, then SJSU. Her native language is Greek and her special areas of interest are cognitive linguistics, semantics, syntax, language typology, historical linguistics and grammaticalization. She is the author of The Grammar of Space (1994, John Benjamins). She has participated in many international and national conferences and has delivered plenary addresses in international conferences held in Belgium, Germany, and Mexico. Dr. Svorou currently works as the Associate Dean for Student Success and Academic Programs in the office of the Dean, Humanities and the Arts.
