CCS Minor Information
The minor in Chicana and Chicano Studies is a unique interdisciplinary program of study that supplements any undergraduate major by providing a well-rounded introduction to the Chicanx-Latinx community, including its historical, cultural, social, political, and economic context. Coursework supports major programs in economics, business, politics, culture, education, personnel management, marketing, psychology/counseling, community development, public administration and fine arts.
Imagine that your major is a camera, an instrument you use to view the world in a new way. Well, a Minor in Chicana and Chicano Studies is like a special filter on your camera’s lens, an added layer that heightens your overall view and provides a better picture.
Why add our minor?
A minor in Chicana and Chicano Studies complements any major and will enhance your educational experience by providing you with space and time to think critically. Critical thinking is an essential part of high-earning careers!
How does the CCS minor complement any major? (examples)
- If you major in Sociology, the CCS minor provides the historical and cultural knowledge to take your major into Chicana/o communities.
- If you major in Art, you will have a broader understanding of the issues most important to Chicana/o communities and how they are expressed in art.
- If you major in Engineering, you'll learn to think critically about society and have fun doing it! We've had many majors Engineering students say, “My CCS classes were my ‘fun’ classes--they kept me sane!”
How many classes do I have to take to earn the minor?
It only takes six 3-unit courses to fulfill the minor!
How does it help with my general education (GE) requirements?
- All undergraduates are required to take American Institutions (US123) courses, usually earned by taking three courses. In our program, if you take our two Chicana and Chicano Studies 10A/B courses (however, it counts for all three!
- All students are required to take an ethnic studies class. We have courses that meet this requirement and toward your minor!
- Taking CCS 74 - Public Address, allows you to meet your Oral Communication GE requirement AND you'll be one course closer to earning a minor in CCS!
If you follow this plan of CCS courses to fulfill GE requirements, you'll only need 2 more classes to earn the minor!
