About the A.S. 55 Award

The A.S. 55 Award is a recognition of distinction for student leaders who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to San José State University and who continually give back to the community. Up to 12 students will be chosen by the A.S. 55 Selection Committee to receive the award. Awardees will be recognized at the 12th Annual SJSU Student Leadership Gala on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at the Diaz Compean Student Union Ballroom and via Livestream.

Qualifications

  • Fully matriculated: undergraduate students (6 units per semester) or graduate students (3 units per semester)
  • Completed a minimum of 12 semester units
  • Minimum cumulative 2.5 Grade Point Average
  • In good standing with the University
  • Not a previous A.S. 55 Award recipient

Important Dates: Spring 2024

Friday, April 5th: Nomination must be submitted no later than 11:59pm. When nominating a student, please allow for ample time for nominee to complete online nomination form.
Friday, April 12th: Application and Letter of Recommendation must be received via e-mail no later than 11:59pm.
Friday, April 26th: Selected awardees will be notified via e-mail. An invitation to the gala will be included.
Tuesday, May 7th: A.S. 55 awardees to be recognized at the SJSU Student Leadership Gala.

How to Nominate Yourself

  1. Complete an online nomination form by April 5th. Please complete four sections outlining the following (250-word limit per section):
    • Awards/Achievements
    • Activities and Organization Involvement
    • Leadership on Campus
    • Community Service/Philanthropy
  2. Letter of Recommendation: request the letter from a fellow student, staff or faculty. Letter should support your nomination for A.S. 55 and highlight your contributions to the campus community. Please e-mail letter to abigail.escobar@sjsu.edu with subject:
    A.S. 55: NOMINEE – LAST NAME, FIRST NAME no later than Friday, April 12 at 5:00pm.

Students may be nominated by fellow students, faculty, staff and community

  1. Complete an online nomination form by April 5ht.
  2. Nominated student must complete the online nomination form no later than April 12th at 5:00pm. Nominee will complete four sections outlining the following (250-word limit per section):

    • Leadership on Campus
    • Community Service/Philanthropy
  3. Letter of Recommendation Submit one for your nominee via e-mail. Explain why you have nominated the student. Describe his/her contributions to the campus community. You may also ask a student, faculty or staff. Letter must be e-mailed abigail.escobar@sjsu.edu with subject:
    A.S. 55: NOMINEE - LAST NAME, FIRST NAME no later than Friday, March 25 at 4:00pm.

About the Student Leadership Gala

Honoring Those Who Make A Difference
The A.S. 55 awardees are recognized at the Student Leadership Gala, a campus-wide event in collaboration with Associated Students, Student Involvement and the Solidarity Network, celebrating the outstanding student leadership at San Jose State University.

A.S. 55 Award: Associated Students 

Honoring and recognizing the unsung heroes of San José State University; those students who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to SJSU and have continually given back to the campus or local communities. 

Student Involvement:
Student Organization Awards

SJSU is home to over 450 Recognized Student Organizations. The organizations include fraternities and sororities, academic and honorary societies, cultural and religious groups, special interest organizations, and club sports. These organizations are where many Spartans develop leadership skills, find community, and create long-lasting friendships and memories that carry with them beyond SJSU. Both individual student leaders and their student organizations will be honored and celebrated for their purposeful contributions to SJSU and the greater community.

Solidarity Network

The Solidarity Network of SJSU is a coalition of student affairs centers fostering student leadership through multiple identities while establishing a social justice foundation. It is comprised of the students and staff of:

  • A.S. César E. Chávez Community Action Center
  • African American/Black Student Success Center
  • Chicanx/Latinx Student Success Center
  • Gender Equity Center
  • MOSAIC Cross Cultural Center
  • PRIDE Center
  • UndocuSpartan Student Resource Center
  • Wellness and Health Promotion

The Solidarity Network encourages collaboration between communities and advocates for institutional change.

Vice President of Student Affairs’ Award for Exemplary Leadership and Service

This honor will be awarded to an SJSU student (junior or senior standing) who has displayed exemplary leadership skills throughout their SJSU career.
