Scholarships
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the History department is proud to offer the scholarships below to deserving undergraduate and graduate History majors. Application deadlines are in the Spring semester each year. Look for announcements by email and on our social media pages.
- Undergraduate Scholarships

Diana Baker Excellence in History Scholarship: Endowed by SJSU graduate and longtime History department administrator Diana Baker.
Clarence & Lyle Burmahln Memorial Fellowship: Endowed by Mrs. Lyle Burmahln of Santa Clara County.
Donald “Scotty” Fletcher Endowment Scholarship: Endowed by Sylvan Rosenzweig of the San Jose Tallow Co. in honor of a long-time employee.
Bruce Gelsinger Memorial Scholarship: Named for a former faculty member of the SJSU History department who taught European history.
Leonard Hall Memorial Scholarship: Endowed by relatives and friends of SJSU graduate Leonard Hall, who gave his life during military service in Vietnam.
James High Memorial Scholarship: In memory of James High, World War II veteran and Professor of History at SJSU for 12 years.
E. Panagopoulos Memorial Scholarship: Endowed by the family of the late E. P. Panagopoulos, Professor of History and Humanities at SJSU for 30 years.
Edith Smith Memorial Scholarship: Endowed by Mrs. Helen Crawford in memory of Edith Elizabeth Smith, who graduated from San Jose State Normal School and taught first grade in San José for 40 years.
J. “Tim” Sweet Memorial Scholarship: Endowed by family and friends of SJSU graduate Tim Sweet, who served in Vietnam before he lost his life in a plane crash in 1978.
Mildred Gentry Winters Memorial Fellowship: In memory of San Jose State graduate Mildred Winters who taught here for 40 years.
Dr. David Furst Jewish Studies Scholarship: Endowed by retired SJSU kinesiology professor Dr. David Furst, this annual scholarship is for an outstanding Jewish Studies minor student. Please notify by email the Jewish Studies coordinator, Dr. Victoria Harrison, when you submit your application.

Harold & Velma Barnes Scholarship: Endowed by SJSU emeritus faculty member Billie Jensen, in honor of her parents.
Clarence & Lyle Burmahln Memorial Fellowships: Endowed by Mrs. Lyle Burmahln of Santa Clara County.
Barbara Buss Casaroli Memorial Scholarship: Endowed by the family of Barbara Buss Casaroli, former SJSU student.
The Axel Jerke Memorial Scholarship: Established by SJSU graduate Iris Jerke, who taught for many years in our department, in honor of her late husband.
Friends of Stacy Trenary-Beddeson Memorial Scholarship: Endowed by friends, faculty, and family in honor of SJSU graduate Stacy Trenary-Beddeson.
Mildred Gentry Winters Endowment Fellowships: In memory of San Jose State graduate Mildred Winters who taught here for 40 years.

History Scholarship Application Instructions
All you need to do is download the application [docx].
Once complete, save and email as an attachment to history@sjsu.edu, subject line: Scholarship Application.
The deadline to submit your application is Friday, October 18th by 11:59 PM. Winners will be selected by the departmental scholarship committee and will receive a congratulatory email from the History Department in April.
Please note that the majority of History scholarships are for Fall 2024, and therefore are for continuing undergraduate and graduate students, or current undergraduate students starting graduate study in the SJSU History Department in Fall 2024. A small number of scholarships will be applied to Spring 2024, and are open to graduating students as well.
