Who We Are

Our campus participates in the California State University (CSU) Health Insurance Education Project (HIEP), which is a statewide initiative to educate the SJSU community—specifically, students, their families, and part-time SJSU employees—on their rights, responsibilities, and opportunities under the new federal Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act (ACA) and Covered California.

Since the project started, well over 60,000 CSU students have enrolled in health insurance plans. Some have enrolled in Medi-Cal, which is free to those who qualify. Others have received very sizable discounts when purchasing insurance through Covered California. Thousands of CSU family members have also enrolled.

Once open enrollment closes (2/15/15), you will not be able to enroll in health insurance through Covered California.  If you are uninsured, you will be subject to a tax penalty, and for many students, the tax penalty is higher than the some insurance premiums.

Why are the Affordable Care Act & Covered California Important to SJSU Students?

One in four college students does not have health insurance in California, making them one of the largest uninsured populations in the state.

Under the new law, many CSU students and their families will be eligible for financial assistance in purchasing health insurance through Covered California (CA). That assistance will be provided on a sliding scale, giving more support for those who earn less.  However, many college students do not yet know their new rights, responsibilities, and opportunities under the new law, highlighting the need for outreach and education.

Who is Covered CA for?

Covered California is available for eligible individuals to purchase affordable health insurance who do not have insurance, are not eligible for health insurance through their employer, or have unaffordable insurance--although anyone who is eligible can shop in Covered California.  Enrollment in Medi-Cal is also available through Covered CA. Medi-Cal applications are accepted year-round.

The Covered California enrollment period ends February 15, 2015.
