The Spartans of Significance: Distinguished Alumni Awards (DAA) celebrate exceptional Spartans who have made a profound impact in their fields and uplifted the San José State University community. This prestigious program honors alumni for remarkable achievements, including professional excellence, dedicated community service, and a commitment to SJSU’s values. Through the Spartans of Significance, we proudly showcase the diverse accomplishments of SJSU’s community, inspiring pride and connection among alumni, students, and friends of the university. This event goes beyond celebration—proceeds directly support the SJSU Alumni Association Scholarship Program, helping students achieve their dreams.

The Recipients

Judge Robert R. Rigsby

Judge Robert R. Rigsby

In 2009, Judge Rigsby made history by becoming the first sitting judge from the District of Columbia and the first military judge inthe Army to deploy on a full-time basis to an active theatre of war. He was selected by the Judge Advocate General of the UnitedStates Army to deploy as the sole military judge in Kuwait, Afghanistan, and Iraq, and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.

Ed Oates

Oates' career in High Tech as a software engineer and executive spanned over 30 years and culminated with the founding of Oracle Corporation with Larry Ellison and Bob Miner in 1977.
