I am in Chicago this week for a work event. I’m always thrilled whenever a conference takes place here because it gives me a chance to spend time with family. Growing up, I never imagined leaving Illinois. Life in California, in particular, seemed as unreal as 90210 and Melrose Place, my favorite shows when I was a teen.

There is so much I miss about Chicago: the architecture, museums, nightlife, vibrant neighborhoods, and summer festivals. But aside from family, what I miss most is the food: tavern-style pizza, Italian beef sandwiches with sweet peppers and giardiniera, a quesadilla made with Chihuahua cheese and corn tortillas from El Milagro—so flavorful that I fly home with a half dozen packs and guard them like My Precious.

My first stop after landing is inevitably Portillo’s, a local chain that sells Chicago-style hot dogs. I always order a hot dog “ketchup-only,” a bold choice in a region where ketchup on a hot dog is widely considered a sacrilege. Although I’m no longer the picky three-year-old who used to turn up her nose at the traditional toppings, I have never once changed my order—because nothing else tastes like home.

What is something you have loved to eat since you were a child? When was the last time you had the chance to enjoy it? Wherever your roots are, I hope you have the opportunity to travel there this summer and eat your favorite meal unique to the region. And if travel is not in your summer plans, then I hope you find ways to recreate elements of that meal and share it with the folks you love. In the meantime, we look forward to everyone returning to our collective “home” of San Jose State this fall when a new academic year begins.

Whether you have already begun exploring AI tools or interested in getting started, there are a variety of professional development opportunities available this summer to learn more.

Introduction to AI Tools for Teaching & Learning: Introduction to Artificial Intelligence tools where guided experimentation empowers participants to understand some of the basics of AI functionality, including its workings and methods for detecting its usage. Learn basic AI terminology, engage in hands-on exploration of AI Tools, learn strategies for detecting AI-generated content, and techniques to address potential misuse of AI tools by students and participants will apply the knowledge gained to develop a personalized AI use policy for their course. Dates: May 27, 2024 – June 16, 2024 | June 24, 2024 – July 21, 2024 | July 29, 2024 – August 18, 2024

Academic Applications of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI): SDSU’s Academic Applications of AI (AAAI) Micro-Credential prepares you to apply generative AI (gAI) technology efficiently, effectively, and ethically to level up learning in the classes you teach. Topics covered include: Overview: How Does gAI Work?, Ethics & Responsible Use, What Can AI Do?, Finding Apps, and Prompt Engineering Activities. Dates: Open-enrollment

Generative AI in the Classroom with Adobe Express: In this self-paced course, you’ll learn about the many applications Adobe Express’ new generative AI features have for teaching and learning, and explore creative and simple activities aimed at supporting your students throughout any project. Dates: Open-enrollment

Hypothesis Academy - Social Annotation in the Age of AI: Hypothesis Academy: Social Annotation in the Age of AI is a two-week course designed to teach you how to use Hypothesis social annotation to navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by AI writing tools such as ChatGPT. By the end of the course, you’ll design the instructions and grading plan for a Hypothesis social annotation activity specifically with AI in mind (this may or may not even use AI outputs). Dates: June 4-18, 2024 | July 30-August 13, 2024

Registration has officially opened for the annual Adobe Education Institute that will take place virtually, June 10-14, 2024. The event is exclusive for faculty and staff at Creative Campus institutions. The focus is on student success and multi-modal teaching and learning. Sessions are 90 minutes and will cover the following higher ed topics: Intro to Adobe Express in Higher Education, Teaching with Generative AI and Firefly, Productivity with Acrobat, Publish Papers and Essays, Designing Presentations, Storytelling with Video, Create Portfolios, Resumes, and CVs, Create Podcasts with Adobe Audition, Digital Imaging with Generative AI, and Create Graphs and Visualize Data. The event will also include office hours, an optional showcase, and an opportunity to receive badging and an “Adobe Education Institute Fellow” credential.

Global Accessibility Awareness Day was on May 16th, but it’s not too late to view the brief videos our SJSU faculty and staff have created. See how they are dedicated to creating a more accessible and inclusive campus! 

With over 1,500 SJSU students registered with a disability and many more students, faculty and staff with undiagnosed or temporary disabilities it is essential that we make accessibility a core requirement! 

Consider enrolling in the Accessibility with Ally a Self Directed Course for clear guidance on creating accessible course content. Use the course as a resource or complete all 8 modules for a badge!

Do you record videos spoken in a language other than English? Did you know Panopto can automatically generate captions in over 20 languages? Panopto automatically generates captions in English, but you can change the language and reprocess the video. Select the settings then select captions. Note: If you change languages throughout the video, you’ll need to manually edit the captions. As best practice, it is important to edit all captions for accuracy.
