Bio

Wendy Quach, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is a licensed, certified speech language pathologist and professor in the Communicative Disorders & Sciences Department. Her teaching and research interests are in the areas of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) for people with complex communication needs and motor speech disorders. She has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in speech sound disorders and supervised graduate students in the Kay Armstead Center for Communication Disorders. Since starting her academic career at San Jose State University, her research has focused on the clinical practice of speech-language pathologists in the decision making process when assessing individuals who need augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). As a clinical researcher, she is acutely aware of the need for more research to inform evidence-based practice guidelines for individuals with complex communication needs (CCN) and their families across languages and cultures. Her research priorities are a direct outgrowth of her years of experience as a clinician, instructor, and mentor.

As Project Director, Dr. Quach has managed three personnel preparation grants funded by the US Department of Education. These grants help to increase the number of speech language pathologists with knowledge and skills in augmentative and alternative communication and cultural humility.

Dr. Quach has presented locally, nationally, and internationally on her research in AAC. She is actively engaged in several collaborative research projects with faculty and professionals both within the Lurie College of Education and universities and research centers across the country. She is a member of the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association and has served as a reviewer for professional journals. From 2016-2019, she served as the President of the United States Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (USSAAC). This organization helps to support individuals who use AAC, families, and professionals. Dr. Quach has a passion for instilling research in her students and currently mentors several students on various projects related to AAC.

Dr. Quach earned her doctorate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Prior to that, she worked in Canada and England with adults and children in a variety of settings, including public schools, hospitals (rehab and acute), and community clinics. In her "free time", she enjoys traveling, photography, yoga, reading, eating (especially dark chocolate) and exploring scenic California.
