Course Description:

This course is the 3rd semester in the calculus-based University Physics for science and engineering majors. It covers Optics (describes the behavior and properties of light and its interaction with matter) and Thermodynamics (describes the macroscopic changes of physical systems as temperature, pressure or volume varies).

Prerequisite:

PHYS 50, PHYS 51 & Math 30/30P. Familiar with Newton's Law, Conservation of Energy and Momentum is essential.

Lab:

Each student must enroll in one section of the Physics 52 Laboratory. The lab grade will be based on your lab reports and lab quizzes. You MUST pass the Laboratory to pass this course even though the Lab grade only counts 10% of the total grade here.

Grading:

homework 10%, quizzes 10%, Lab 10%, 2 mid-term each 20%, final 30%

Final Letter grades will be assigned roughly according to the following percentage of maximum points earned as long as you pass the Laboratory section as well.

• A 85% or above
• B 70 - 85%
• C 55 - 70%
• D 40 - 55%
• F below 40%
