Bio
I am a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Communication Studies at San Jose State University teaching courses since 2005. I have teaching experience in Social Media, Media and Resistance, Small Group Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Critical Decision Making, Public Speaking, and I specialize in Conflict Resolution, Communication & Conflict and Mediation. I have also taught the Synthesis & Application course, the culminating experience for our graduating seniors.
I have offered numerous Conflict & Communication workshops focusing on Conflict Resolution for diverse audiences. I was invited to create a Conflict & Communication workshop for the SJSU Peer Connections Department, which was presented in Spring 2022. I also developed the curriculum for a Communication & Conflict workshop for a community organization which will be part of their consistent management training seminars.
I was appointed the Director of the San Jose State University Communication Studies Internship Program as of August 2022. As the Director of this program, it is my responsibility to engage in policy decisions, program compliance, strategic planning, and program accountability. I interface with multiple departments on campus to ensure compliance of applicable policies and act as an intermediary between students, the department and university.
I was elected as an Executive Member of the Lecturers’ Council and served for a year and a half. This council has a mission to provide a safe platform for lecturers to voice their concerns, promote lecturers’ rights and social justice, fight systemic workplace inequalities, inform lecturers of their rights under the CFA Collective Bargaining Agreement, inform administration of lecturers’ issues, and to build coalitions with other entities on campus and across the CSU System.
I routinely sit on committees including the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice and Accessibility Committee, Lecturers Voting Rights Task Force, Online Degree Program Committee, and Scholarship Committees. The mission for each committee is policy creation, enforcement, and change.
From 2020 to 2022 I served the university as a faculty mentor to over 150 faculty
members in the Teach Online and Resilient Course Design Programs. In 2021 I was appointed
Co-Director of the Teach Online Program.
Recently, I was quoted in an article from PC World Magazine regarding AI in the classroom,
and I have presented information about incorporating ethical usage of AI in the classroom
at ATXpo. I was also invited to a round table discussion at the SJSU AI Symposium,
and have offered professional development workshops in the Communication Studies Department
regarding the same.
