Annotated Bibliography

My topic for my annotated bibliography is my all-time favorite, fantasy, which can also be associated with supernatural. Although I do love non-fiction, biographies and fiction, fantasy is what seems to keep my interest. Growing up I attached myself to the Harry Potter series, it was good to get me out of my own head. I struggled a lot with emotions and having a world that couldn�t possibly exist kept me busy. I would read for hours and get lost in the adventure and I liked to pretend that I could live in this world of make believe. Ever since then, even as a 23 year old my main interests when it comes to books are that of the fantasy.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban begins with Harry�s third year at Hogwarts. It is also the first of his teenage year. At thirteen Harry and his friends are faced with many difficult decisions. Harry learns that his godfather is looking for him and is the man responsible for killing his parents. He is faced with a werewolf for a teacher and a rat that turns out to be Peter Petigrew the man responsible for his parent�s death. With the help of his friends he goes on a journey to find out the truth of the night his parents were murdered. He is helped along the way by his friends and professors in saving his godfather and Buckbeat.

Harry and his friends are in a magical land where wands and ghost are. There are all the elements of fantasy with flying, time-turners, animals that are invisible and even people that turn into animals. With all of these different creative elements, the fantasy is brought to life in many different ways. Although there is a hint of realism related to the camaraderie and relations that are formed between the characters.

Twilight is about a young girl who moves to a small cold rainy town to live with her father. She plans on finishing her last two years of high school and then moving off to college. What she doesn�t plan is meeting a guy, Edward Cullen, who also happens to be a vampire. They fall in love and risk their lives to be with one another not caring that their relationship is dangerous. Then there are the werewolves, who come in the second book in the series.

These characters do not live in a fantasy land only visible to their kind. They live in a real town with real people. Moving constantly so as not to be recognized. The vampires can wander outside in the day time, but out of the sun or they sparkle like diamonds. The werewolves can turn at will. They live amongst people yet are a fantasy. Another part of the fantasy is Bella, and her ability to get in the middle of situations and come out alive, although she is always bruised and broken in the end, like a normal human, she still has these strong fantasy characters on her side.

This story takes place in the 1940s during World War II; they are moved away from London because their lives are in danger and sent to live with Professor Digory Kirk, a man who lives out in the country. The kids get bored on a rainy day and decide to play hide and seek. The youngest sibling Lucy, discover a land in a wardrobe. When she informs her siblings they do not believe her, until they too find themselves in the land in the wardrobe. They are destined to help save the land from the evil White Witch. While Edmund, the second brother is coxed by the White Witch to help her, the other three fight on the side of Aslan, the talking lion. They come in contact with many talking animals and in the end help defeat the White Witch so that Narnia can have a summer and peace again.

Real important events take place in the beginning of this book. The children are in fear of a war that is taking place, and they are taken out of danger so that they don�t have to suffer. While they are on the journey in Narnia, they are yet again faced with a war. I think what helps them in not being scared is all the extra elements. They even at some points still have a hard time believe that they are not dreaming. And in this particular book the main characters are not the supernatural or the fantasy, they are normal children placed in another dimension.

A war between the Trojans and the Greeks is taking place. It was started because Paris had taken away a women named Helena and brought back to his land. Helen was then known as the face that launched a thousand ships. With a war that is continued among the men between both sides, the Gods finally have enough. They think it is their place to interfere with the humans so that the fighting can finally stop. The problem is that there are certain God�s and Goddesses that take with the Trojan�s side or the Greek�s side.

What I loved about his particular book was that the Gods and Goddesses didn�t play a huge role the entire time. They kept low profile an even when they intervened still kept it as though they played only a small part in war. This was not too fantasy like but just enough to spark and interest and bring up a higher power; they were something more powerful than the humans or anything else.

Paolini, Christopher. Eragon. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 2003. Print.

This book is about a fifteen year old farm boy who lives with his Uncle and his cousin. While hunting Eragon find what he thinks is a stone, but just a few days later it hatches and a baby dragon is born. Eragon names the dragon Saphira and raises it while hiding it, until the kings servants go looking for the egg. His uncle is killed by the servants, and Eragon seeks revenge. Eragaon goes on a journey with his dragon and becomes a dragon rider.

This novel starts out with elves and dragons. There are the fantasy aspects all over this particular book. Eragon is surprised by the dragon but he keeps him, not fearing that he could be killed by this monster. Instead he protects it. This book is about friendship between a farm boy and a dragon.

Tolkien, J. R. R., and Alan Lee. The Lord of the Rings. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1993. Print.

The story is surrounded by a ring that was made to hold power over all the other ring holders including Men, Elves and Dwarves. After the ring is cut off of the one who made it, it was found 2,000 years later by two hobbits. Frodo Baggan inherits the ring from his cousin, both of whom are unaware of the power that it holds. After Frodo is warned about the ring, he and his friends set off to get it as far away from the shire as possible. They come in contact with Men, Elves, and Dwarves. They cross rivers and mountain�s and deal with obstacles they have never encountered.

This fantasy novel is taking the main characters out of their comfort zone. Although they are hobbits they come in contact with many other creatures. They fight with all their strength, deal with creatures and are smaller than most. Their adventure starts with fear but ends up making them stronger as a person, or in their case a hobbit.

Klause, Annette Curtis. Blood and Chocolate. New York: Delacorte, 1997. Print.

In this book the main character is a young girl names Vivian who loves turning into a wolf, she I sixteen, beautiful and strong. She is well liked by all the other young boys that are in her pact. She has a hard time because her father is dead; leaving their pact leaderless because of this there is some chaos. As she is feeling lost she meets and falls in love with a boy who they refer to as �Meat-Boy.� His name is Aiden and he is kind and gentle who loves the supernatural. Although Vivian wants to tell him, she worries that he it would threaten the safety of her pact.

This novel that surrounded by love, Vivian a werewolf, when it is mostly men, has fallen in love with a boy. She knows that since she is different that there would be no way they could really be together. And although supernatural and fantasy are what he is interested, Vivian cannot bring herself to tell Aiden the truth.

Riordan, Rick. Percy Jackson and the Olympians the Lightning Thief. Thorndike, 2009. Print.

Percy Jackson has both ADHD and Dyslexia and attends a middle school for troubled kids. During a field trip Percy is attacked by his teacher who is actually a mythical creature, known as a Furry. With the help of his Latin teacher Percy kills the Furry, and everyone goes on like she never existed. There was a mist that helped erase the memory of the mortals. Percy goes on vacation with his mom and tells her of an odd encounter him and his friend had, so she sends him to a camp for demigods. On their way to the camp a Minotaur kills Percy�s mom At the camp he finds out that his father is Poseidon, the god of the sea.

This novel is adventure and fantasy and love. Percy is attacked over and over again and keeps going, not knowing that he is the son of a powerful God. He tries to help rescue his mother and the fate of the world between the Gods and the world rest in his hands along with his two friends. Like most of the novel there is a camaraderie that fits into the fantasy.

Smith, L. J. "Secret Circle." The Initiation. 15 Sept. 2011. Television.

In the pilot episode of �The Secret Circle� a young girl named Cassie Blake has lost her mother to an �accidental� fire. She is forced to move in with her grandmother and attracts the attention of a few people form school. She finds out that they are all witches and that they have been waiting for her to bind their magic. But Cassie is hesitant, until Adam, her destined soul mate, shows her there is more to magic then what she thinks.

This show which originated from a book is about witches and secret societies. There are a lot of demonic qualities to it, even bringing up actual demons in it. Although it is not all fantasy there is one particular scene that stands out. When Adam is showing Cassie that they can make magic together, their love starts to come out too. They make the rain water that was resting on plants and the grass rise up and come to a standstill.

Wolverton, Linda. Alice in Wonderland. 25 Feb. 2010. Movie.

This movie is about Alice at the age of 19. She is mourning the loss of her father, as she attends a garden party she is proposed to. This comes to her as a shock and she runs away. She follows a white rabbit and is thrown into Underland. She comes across the mad hatter, tweedle dee and tweedle dum, the Red Queen and eventually the White Queen. She was destined to return to help the White Queen destroy the Red Queen and to kill the Jabberwocky. In the end Alice succeeds in killing the Jabberwocky and returns to the garden party, where she declines the proposal and instead takes over her father�s business.

Alice is in another world, a fantasy land that she doesn�t remember visiting before. This time as an adult she is faced with bigger problems. The fantasy world helps her realize her potential and lets her know she could do anything. She didn�t need to settle down and marry someone she was not interested in. She had help from characters that were silly and fun, which made her life seem a lot less serious.
