- How to prepare? Motivation is unique to the individual. What works for one person will not necessarily work for another. Some are
motivated by confidence, while others will become overconfident. Some are motivated by fear, while others will
become paralyzed by fear. Some are motivated by wanting to show others how good they are, while others are turned
off by having to prove themselves. You are the best judge of what works for you.

WRITING ASSIGNMENT #1 -- due 3/23, NO late papers!
- See [WritingAssignment1Criteria.doc]
for updates and details
- A couple of students approached me to tell me they do not know their culture beliefs.
Two
recommendations:
- Ask a parent, grandparent, neighbor, or relative! Judge their words
and reactions. You might get frank opinions or you might get uncomfortable silence. Either way, this
can be informative.
- Look inward. Ask yourself what you really believe about the topic. For example, if your topic is
depression, do you think this is "inborn" or environmental? Are depressed people responsible for their
depression ("get over it!") or are they victims of circumstance ("poor thing")? Is seeing a psychologist a sign of
weakness or strength? You can ask these questions about almost any condition.
- Writing is work. Write your papers in stages. "Writing is
rewriting." Your paper should be drafted and rewritten. Some people
prefer to work from an outline.
