New Faculty Onboarding

The Center for Faculty Development offers programming to support orientation and onboarding of new tenure-track and lecturer faculty.

New Faculty Jump Start

Jump Start, our onboarding programming for new tenure-track faculty, consists of 4 phases (3 required, and 1 optional):
  1. Asynchronous onboarding programming in Canvas, July 20th through August 6th.  Modular content focuses on teaching, RSCA, and service/leadership, including the foundations of understanding and navigating SJSU as an organizational culture.
  2. Synchronous programming, on campus, the week of August 7th.  These are half-days of programming, focused on themes or questions--e.g., student success; Review, Tenure and Promotion (RTP); and Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity (RSCA).
  3. Wednesday workshop series, Fall 2023.  This is a lunchtime meeting series, with 9 sessions organized by CFD, and 4 sessions organized by faculty members' colleges.  These sessions include introduction to different offices and services at SJSU as well as opportunities for faculty to converse and connect with each other.
  4. Optional Wednesday workshop meetings, Spring 2024.  These are optional workshops that attend to topics new faculty specifically request.  In past semesters, this has included workshops on RTP mini-reviews, IRB policy and procedure, and research development support offered through the Division of Research and Innovation.
Fall 2023 expected dates:
College Convenings: 9/6, 10/4, 11/1, 11/29
Common Convenings:  8/30, 9/13, 9/20, 9/27, 10/11, 10/18, 10/25, 11/8, 11/15
All meetings are 12-1:15 pm PT.

Please contact Deanna L. Fassett, Assistant Vice Provost for Faculty Development, with any questions.

New Lecturer Welcome

New lecturer faculty will be invited to a synchronous welcome meeting on one of the pre-semester activities days, including sessions with University Personnel and representatives from the California Faculty Association.  The Center for Faculty Development also maintains a collection of online, asynchronous support materials, available in Canvas.
